Chrystal
was raised in Julian, NC. From a very young age Chrystal was always
musically inclined. She spent a lot of her childhood learning the
songs of Bill Monroe, The Stanley Brothers, Ricky Skaggs, and numerous
others. She attended lots of Fiddler's contests growing up and even
winning some in the vocal category. Throughout high school she was
involved in chorus at her school, and was picked to be in the U.S. chorus
her junior year. Chrystal was heavily influenced by Emmylou Harris
and Ricky Skaggs growing up. She is often compared to Dolly Parton
and Alison Krauss. Chrystal is very humbled by any comparisons to
them. In the 1990's Chrystal first heard a tape of a family from
Cotton Valley, LA. When she heard the family singing she was "struck"
by their voices." She had never heard anything sound so tight as
their harmony, their voices were so beautiful, it was definitely blood
harmony. The tape that Chrystal still cherishes is an album by "The
Cox Family."
Chrystal recorded
an album in the summer of 2003 at Scott Vestal's studio in Greenbriar,
TN. Chrystal recorded songs that she was influenced by, and that
she felt fit the whole album. The album is self-titled,"Chrystal
Sawyer." It was released in March, 2004, on Running Dog Records.
